Generally, all food sources go bad or spoil after certain durations of time. Some lasts for hours, days, weeks or months while others lasts for a few or several years. Coconut Oil is not an exemption to that, since it is used as a part of life, whether it is in the industry for cosmetic use such as to moisturize and restore dry, brittle hair or treat dry skin.
Coconut oil is widely available in tropical areas and one of the best sources of fat. Since it is mostly available in the tropics, questions like longer shelf life than other oils. This statement is only half true.
Most cases the coconut oils is treated the same way as vegetable oil does, although there are differences between the two, such as ingredients and the process it went through to get to the final product.
Storing Coconut Oil
Most oils of any form are generally stored in the fridge, pantry or just at normal room temperature. Even if you store coconut oil where the temperature drops, it will still retain its quality. No need to worry about it being in its solidified state. The melting point of the coconut oil is about 24 degrees Celsius. If room temperature is hotter than normal, expect the oil to be in liquid form. The same goes when it is vice versa. The consistency ranges from runny, jelly-like to almost as hard as a rock.
The latter happens when you place it inside a chiller and that you need it to expose to the average heat in order to bring it back to its liquid form. If you wish to heat, just a few minutes of it will do. You can also scoop out the solidified form and no longer need to wait for everything to melt. This would be better since you will not spill the coconut oil while you scoop it out.
Keep in mind that coconut oil is just like every other oil in the kitchen – its quality drops when hit by direct sunlight, too much heat or exposed to oxygen. The hotter the temperature of the room you are storing the coconut oil in, the faster it gets spoiled. It is preferable to store the coconut oil in the pantry or in a place where it is cool, away from the heat. Some people store the coconut oil inside refrigerators since it assures owners that it is away from the heat, preserving the quality of the oil. Avoid storing coconut oil in places where the temperature changes constantly, such as the bathroom.
Depending on the manufacturer, they either place an expiration date or best before date on the packaging of their coconut oil products. These two may seem similar, but they are to be understood differently. Both mean that you have to consume the product before the indicated date, but the difference is that expiration means the product should be thrown away after the indicated date while best before means the product loses its quality or the usual taste.
Generally, all coconut oil can go as far as four years as long as the product is stored in the right way. But manufacturers want to keep their consumers safe; they put an estimated date that needs everything to be consumed. But some people still use the oil, as long as they do not see any sign of spoilage. To be on the safe side, follow the date indicated on the package.
When Coconut Oil Goes Bad
Coconut oil has a lot of saturated fats, meaning that the oil is quite stable. But getting into contact with contaminated objects such as dirty spoons or those that have not been clean will quickly spoil the product. If you are seeing little molds within the glass container, discontinue use.
